Asteroid-World Summer 1986

I’ve received 20 or more requests for the “interim newsletter” with one suggestion for a name, but I decided to keep it clean and simple, just the names of the primary topics. Behind the superficial, obvious fact of the topics, the title also hints at the uniqueness of our astrological world when asteroids are included in it. So, until further notice, the newsletter will be known as “Asteroid-World”. Some people want the asteroids; some the world-view; some just don’t want to be left out of anything. (I fit in all three categories.) Some readers are exploring interests of their own, and by the next version of this venture, I hope to include some summaries to make this more of a cooperative network.
Meanwhile: At the UAC conference (which was lively and in a very pleasant setting except for the unfortunate speakers assigned to tents), Rick Ostrander gave me the data for the first flight of a “heavier than air” craft by the Wright brothers in 1903 in N.C. I am including a copy of the chart, with local houses added for Cape Canaveral, FL. As readers know, anything that has a beginning has a horoscope. Though this first flight was only in the air for some 20 seconds, and only achieved about 5 feet above the ground, (if my memory is accurate), it still marks a historic first and should give us clues to the future potentials for human flight. Our venture into deep space, above our atmosphere, is an extension of our early flights, and theoretically can still use the same initial horoscope. Based on that theory, I calculated the chart’s local houses for Cape Canaveral, and progressed it to the date of the Challenger explosion. And, of course, I ran all the asteroids.
Before checking, which asteroids would we expect to be prominent in the chart? Atlantis, of course, for modern technology and its potential for abuse. Some of the asteroids named for Russian people, states, etc. since Russia put up the first satellite and is currently working in a space station while we are grounded. The seven asteroids named for the seven astronauts who were killed in the Challenger explosion. Some of the ones named for adventurers, or associated with fame and/or death to be activated by progressions. Those named for our own country such as America and Washingtonia. Urania (if it is like Uranus, associated with new knowledge and explosions), etc.
Results: For starters, natal Atlantis was conjunct the local MC (in Cape Canaveral) within ten minutes of longitude at 0 Sagittarius. Both Atlantis and the local MC were square the natal East Point within the one degree orb I usually allow. Progressed Atlantis was trioctile natal Vesta and progressed local East Point and octile progressed MC. Progressed local Part of Death was quincunx natal Atlantis-local MC and trioctile progressed Washingtonia and progressed Saturn. The Washingtonia-Saturn square was part of a network including Gagarin (the first Soviet astronaut), Fama (for fame), Lilith and Frigga (which seem very like Pluto), Anubis (Egyptian God of the Dead), all clustered in the ninth house around Washingtonia in Scorpio, while Saturn (ruler of the natal eighth house) was conjunct progressed Venus which was conjunct the Canaveral natal Ascendant. Progressed Pax (peace or the lack of it) and Gallia (France) formed a fixed T-square from Taurus. The progressed Part of Death for the N.C. birthplace was trioctile the natal Canaveral MC and Atlantis and opposite progressed America. Progressed America was, of course, octile the natal Canaveral MC and Atlantis, the latter within one minute of longitude.
I wonder if others have the same profound sense of awe when they see such patterns, and we have only started to examine them. Remember that the flight was in 1903. Canaveral, at that time, was a deserted stretch of beach in Florida. Atlantis had not been discovered. (That occurred in 1931). How does the cosmos manage this incredible dance?
The initial horoscope is impressively just what astrologers would expect. Aquarius is rising, the sign of new technology, especially connected to air. Uranus, the Ascendant ruler, conjuncts the Sun in the tenth house in Sagittarius, indicating the publicity (Sun) and destiny of travel to far away places as well as the new knowledge involved. Jupiter, ruler of Sagittarius, is in the first house of personal action, conjunct the Antivertex (auxiliary Ascendant). The asteroid “Karl Marx” is also in the first house conjunct “Pittsburghia” (similar to Pluto with its potential for power struggles) and the local (Canaveral) Antivertex, all at ten degrees of Pisces square the natal Moon at ten Sagittarius in the tenth house. Pluto is exactly trine the Ascendant and Urania completes an exact grand trine in air signs. Mars (personal power and action) conjuncts Saturn (executive power and law) in Aquarius (new knowledge) in the twelfth house (faith and ethics based on faith) and is quincunx Neptune (faith-ethics again) in Cancer (the earth and the public) in the fifth house (expanding power). A yod is filled in by the natal Canaveral Part of Death in Sagittarius, which is exactly on the natal MC in North Carolina.
Dozens more features of the natal chart, including asteroids, could be listed, but the progressed chart demands more time. Among the striking patterns, the progressed Ascendant has been conjunct Pluto for the preceding two years and remains there into 1987. Progressed Sun just reached the square to progressed Pluto a month before the explosion, and will hold the square for about three years (first to progressed and then to natal Pluto). Is that a dramatic statement about our spring disaster with rockets and the possible grounding of the space program for a year or more? Progressed Vesta (Virgo key to competence in work and health) was on the IC opposite the natal MC and Canaveral Part of Death. The Canaveral progressed Ascendant was opposite the natal Moon and progressed McAuliffe and square the local Antivertex, Karl Marx, and Pittsburghia. All the asteroids theoretically associated with Virgo issues of efficiency and health were prominent. Progressed Aesculapia was conjunct progressed Onizuka with both opposite Neptune. Progressed Astraea was conjunct Pluto and progressed Ascendant. Progressed Hygiea was trioctile natal Antivertex, octile progressed California and Dembowska, and opposite natal McNair. Dembowska seems much like Saturn in my experience, and the state of California is being affected by the threat to defense industries and the closure of the Vandenberg shuttle launching site. Progressed Hestia was on the north node of the Moon and square progressed Neptune, Onizuka, and Aesculapia. A full mutable cross at 10 to 11 degrees included the transiting Moon at 11 Virgo with progressed California and Dembowska; natal Moon and progressed McAuliffe in Sagittarius; natal Karl Marx, Pittsburghia, birthplace and local Antivertex and progressed McNair in Pisces; progressed local Ascendant and north node of Uranus in Gemini. Remember that 10 to 11 Virgo is our Constitution MC, our Declaration of Independence Ascendant (for my version of the chart); Reagan’s MC (again for my version); and the place of the Halley’s Comet station in May-June when the results of the Challenger investigation were out, with the news of our continued grounding.
We have still hardly touched the information in this chart. The Canaveral progressed Antivertex was conjunct natal Scobee and progressed Osiris, another Egyptian god associated with the underworld of the dead. I have not identified the names of the astronauts, assuming all readers are familiar with them. Progressed Scobee was quincunx natal McAuliffe and progressed Smith in the eighth house, and just outside the one degree orb of an opposition to progressed Jarvis. Natal Smith was on the eighth house Urania with Jarvis just over one degree past them. Progressed Resnik was on natal East Point square Atlantis and Canaveral MC. Progressed Atlantis was on natal Resnik. Natal Onizuka opposed Vesta with progressed Ascendant square it and progressed Atlantis octile it. Progressed Siva was just two minutes short of a conjunction with the Canaveral MC. The aspect became exact soon after the event and will remain in orb for some years. Progressed Gaea (earth) was conjunct natal Saturn, and progressed Medusa (fear?) was conjunct the natal Ascendant. In the myth, people who looked at Medusa turned to stone, and our space program was certainly stopped in its tracks this past spring.
Another fascinating detail was progressed Libya on the natal IC. Of course it was still well within orb when we mounted our air attacks on Libya in March and April 1986. The involvement of Gallia (and other asteroids not mentioned like Alemannia for Germany) fit the trouble with the European rocket which temporarily grounded Western Europe’s space program. Meanwhile, Russia remained successful with progressed Russia conjunct the natal Moon along with progressed Oceana (The fragments of the shuttle fell in the ocean). Progressed Karl Marx was on progressed Mars with both on the natal north node of Mars in Aries. On the day the Challenger was lost, the progressed Quotidian MC reached this conjunction. The Canaveral Quotidian MC was on progressed Jupiter, octile progressed Saturn and Venus. It is called “learning the hard way.”
Many more details might be mentioned, but readers can watch the chart themselves as a continuing key to our potential for escaping the confines of earth. If readers are interested, I could photocopy the whole set of asteroids for charts of general interest such as this one. I do sympathize with readers like Edward Dearborn who wrote that since he did not have all of these extra asteroids, it was hard to get enthusiastic about them. Remember, an ephemeris is available for any of them for my cost of photocopying and postage: two dollars each. But they are so much work to look up by hand, I hope lots of our readers who have computers will be able to get a hard disk and get the whole 369 asteroids. The whole set takes just under 8 Megabytes; nearly half of a 20 MB hard disk.
Another recently acquired chart is of Josef Mengele, the butcher of Auschwitz under the Nazis. It is not relevant for future events, so is mainly helpful to test the meanings of the asteroids and the usefulness of different techniques in astrology. Marc Penfield wrote to Germany and got Mengele’s birth time, and the chart was published in Mark Lerner’s newspaper, Welcome to Planet Earth. Since Mengele spent his last years in Brazil, successfully hiding from the Israelis, I expected Brasilia to be prominent. Since he drowned in the ocean, I thought Oceana should also be featured in the secondary progressions for his date of death. Both expectations were confirmed. Natal Brasilia was conjunct his natal MC, and progressed Oceana was conjunct his natal Ascendant and square his natal Moon in the fourth house. I also expected some kind of emphasis on Vesta and Saturn for the personal alienation from feelings for people, with the possibility of Hestia (the Greek Vesta) also being highlighted. Saturn is closely conjunct Ceres (the more human side of Virgo) but they are on the midpoint of Venus in Aries and Vesta in Taurus, all in the eleventh house. In this case, the personal (self-absorbed) signs in the house of objective knowledge, and the focus on job results, manifested as a monster. Hestia was on his twelfth house Pluto in Gemini, square natal Sun in Pisces in the Capricorn (tenth) house. Mars conjunct Uranus in the eighth house added to the self-absorption and willingness to control others to escape the risk of being controlled. Yet, Mengele had a grand trine in water, was said by Penfield to have been protective of animals, and was himself protected up to his death when he was almost 68 years old. Water trines suggest faith at the unconscious level that we will be helped when we need it, and he was always given that support.
Other prominent asteroids included Anubis (associated with death) on Mengele’s natal Pallas, Osiris (another death figure) and Astraea (health) on his natal Sun, and Nemesis on his Part of Death square Uranus which remained on his Placidus eighth house cusp all his life. Phaethon (potential Sun overreach) and Europa (for the continent?) opposed the Part of Death and also squared Uranus. Pax (peace or the lack of it) was on his Descendant. America squared his Sun, Greenwich (for England?) was conjunct his Mars, and Russia was conjunct his East Point. Mengele was wounded in battle against Russia and escaped Auschwitz just before the Russians captured the concentration camp. He was captured by the Allies (U.S. and English?) soon after, but they released him and he eventually escaped to South America. When he drowned, progressed Atlantis was conjunct his natal Medusa and Tantalus, square natal Ascendant and opposite natal Moon. Progressed Siva was conjunct his progressed south node of the Moon. Progressed Davida (Israel?) was square his natal Mars.
Many more aspects and asteroids might be mentioned, but I want to comment on the harmonic arc directions for his date of death. Readers will remember that the harmonic arc requires a computer or a calculator using planetary positions that are more accurate than the ones available in ephemerides or on computer printouts which are rounded off to a minute of longitude. It is possible to get accuracy within a degree using rounded positions, but not to the minute. I have been testing this little-used technique for some years now, and continue to be impressed when I use it for major events. Mengele’s chart provides a dramatic example supporting both the technique and the local houses for the place of the event. The technique involves multiplying the solar arc (natal sun subtracted from progressed sun) by the natal positions of the planets and angles, so each planet has a unique motion depending on its natal position. Planets early in the zodiac move very slowly; planets late in the zodiac move very quickly.
Listing only the aspects which were exact within a one degree orb at his death, Mengele’s harmonic arc directed Saturn was on his local IC and square local Ascendant, his directed Mars was on his local eighth cusp (Placidus) and quincunx East Point, directed Venus and Pluto were on his natal Uranus-eighth cusp, directed Neptune and Pallas were on Venus, directed Mercury opposed the Antivertex, directed Antivertex opposed East Point and was quincunx directed Saturn, directed Moon squared Vesta, directed Sun was quincunx the local MC, directed Chiron was on natal Moon square Ascendant directed Jupiter was trioctile directed Vesta, directed Uranus was on the midpoint of natal Sun-Pallas, octile the north (true) node of the Moon.
After the impressive results with the planetary harmonic arcs, I had a strong urge to check the arcs for the asteroids. For any of our readers who have our computer programs, the arc program is number 4 on the “Extras” menu. When you pick that number, the computer asks for the progressed chart which will be the source of the arcs and you give the number of that chart. The computer then calculates how far the Sun, Ascendant, and Vertex have moved from their natal positions, and adds those arcs to the natal positions of everything in the horoscope to produce the directed positions. The solar arc is multiplied by the natal positions to give the harmonic arc positions. The uncanny accuracy of the system is one of many experiences in astrology which have convinced me that you can do almost anything to the sky as long as you are systematic. The results will show you the same order in a slightly different way.
For readers who do not have our program but would like to experiment a little with the harmonic arcs, I am including a couple of pages that Mark prepared on the computer. They give approximate motions for a year, a month, a week, and a day for each degree of the zodiac for one degree of movement of the progressed Sun. Remember that these are approximate, rounded off, but you can try them out by multiplying the distance your Sun has moved in secondary progressions times the yearly motion of each natal planet and angle to get the approximate distance the planet has moved at the time of a past event in your life. After getting the distance moved, you have to subtract the zodiac repeatedly until the final figure is less than 360, and you then convert the figure back to the zodiac. At the bottom of each page of motions is a table of multiples of 360. Pick the largest one that can be subtracted from your calculated movement.

To see how accurate the approximations would be, I did the calculations for Mengele’s Moon. His natal Moon was 11 Libra 59 which I rounded to 12 Libra. The table gives a motion of 192 degrees for 12 Libra for each degree of movement of the progressed Sun, so I multiplied 192 times 66 (Mengele’s solar arc at death was 66 degrees and 21 minutes) to get 12672. I then subtracted the nearest multiple of 360 which was 12600 to have a remainder of 72. The remaining solar arc of 21 minutes is just over one/third of a degree. One third of the 192 movement would be 64 which I added to the 72 to get 136. One twentieth of the 64 (for the extra minute of solar arc) would be another 3 to get 139. 120 degrees completes Cancer so my result would be 19 degrees into Leo. The actual harmonic arc directed Moon was 18 Leo 33.
For curiosity, I also tried the tables on Oceana. Natally, it was 19 Gemini 52. I first rounded it off to 20 Gemini, found in the table that it moves 80 degrees for each degree of solar arc, multiplied the 80 by 66 to get 5280, subtracted 5040 for a remainder of 240. One third of the movement of 80 degrees (for the 21 minutes) is 26 and a fraction. I made it 28 for the extra minute. Adding 28 to 240 gives 268, but we need to remove the extra 8 minutes which was added to get the original rounding to 20 degrees. Multiplying the 8 by the arc of 66 degrees produces 528 which is divided by 60 (the number of minutes in a degree) to produce 8.8. Subtracting the 8.8 from 268 gives us 259.2 or 19 plus Sagittarius. It is obviously easier and more accurate when the computer does it. As a result of my struggles with this table, Mark added a little to the asteroid program so I am now able to run the harmonic arcs for the whole set of asteroids. Directed Oceana turned out to be 19 Sagittarius 40.
Moving on to other people, for those interested in world figures even without birth times, another birth date in Mark Lerner’s newspaper is for Nelson Mandela, the imprisoned leader of the blacks in South Africa. He is said to have been born on July 18, 1918, in Qunu, Transkei, South Africa, 31 S 35, 28 E 47, zone 2 hours after UT. I have not taken time to try to rectify the chart.
John Van Zandt of Michigan just sent us another birth date; Sarah Ferguson, new wife of Prince Andrew and Duchess of York. She is reported to have been born on October 15, 1959 in Dummer, about 49 miles from London. Someone is sure to come up with her time before long. For those who want to practice rectification, see what you can do with her spectacular marriage and then see how close you are when her time is produced. I have done a speculative chart for 10:10 A.M. UT in London. Our atlas does not include Dummer and she would have local cusps in London anyway. The chart fits beautifully, but rectifying with one event is almost pure speculation. I put her Jupiter in Sagittarius on the Ascendant, her progressed MC on natal Sun in the tenth house, progressed Jupiter trine natal Moon, progressed Moon on the progressed south node of the Moon opposite progressed Venus on the progressed north node, among many other patterns. That time also puts progressed Ascendant on progressed Ceres (how soon do you think she will be pregnant?), sextile natal tenth house Vesta close to her Sun in Libra. Her career will be marriage to the Prince and producing his children. Regardless of time, her progressed Sun is on natal Pallas and progressed Juno is also still conjunct Pallas, just past the progressed Sun. Progressed Pallas is on natal Cupido and the natal Ascendant (if the speculative time is right).
Others of the new asteroids include progressed Utopia, Davida, and Khufu on her natal Jupiter trine the progressed mean nodes and the progressed Moon (if the time is close to accurate). David was a king, Khufu was a pharaoh, and for Utopia, Sarah said it was the happiest day of her life. Rhea was the wife of Saturn, and Sarah’s progressed Saturn was conjunct her natal Rhea and Galahad while progressed Rhea was conjunct her progressed Antivertex (if my time is right) and progressed Galahad. I was amused to note that my speculative time put all the Arthurian asteroids into prominent positions. The English royal family sometimes seems like a legend in modern dress, so what could be more appropriate when marrying into the family? Sarah also had progressed Helio (Sun, fame, love?) on her Chiron opposite progressed Apollo, another Sun god; progressed Aten, another Sun god, was just past her natal Venus, sextile natal Mercury and square progressed Mercury; progressed Aphrodite (another Venus) was conjunct natal Mercury; progressed Pax was on natal Vesta, Gaea, Dembowska; progressed Washingtonia was on her natal Sun and possible progressed MC; (bet they visit Washington as good will ambassadors); progressed Europa was on my speculative IC and progressed MC on Oceana for the honeymoon starting in Europe and continuing on to a ship on the Atlantic ocean. For a final touch, progressed Midas was opposite natal Jupiter and my speculative Ascendant when she married into one of the richest families on earth.
Switching gears again, one of our California entertainments during the past month has been a rash of earthquakes. I have run horoscopes for the three major ones, (as well as a recent one in Alaska) and looked at the asteroids. I was particularly eager to check Gaea as a key to things that affect the earth, and I was intrigued to note that Gaea was trioctile the midpoint of Ascendant and MC within one degree for both of the California land quakes. In the two with an epicenter in the ocean, off Oceanside and in the Aleutian islands, Oceana had the angle aspects; quincunx the MC/Ascendant for the one near Oceanside and square the MC and IC in the Aleutians. Four cases are just anecdotal, but I surely wish I had time to check a whole bunch. When we get a computer program that will do all the work, I’ll let you know. Even if the results prove significant, they will not be any help for forecasting since the angles change constantly and similar aspects form several times every day. For the two nuclear tests the U.S. conducted in April this year, Gaea was opposite the Ascendant for the April 21 test and quincunx the twelfth house south node of the Moon for the April 10 test. The April 10 experiment was rumored to involve tests of “star wars” theories. Other aspects included Urania conjunct the south node of the Moon, Atlantis conjunct Potomac (the river where the Pentagon is located), octile Sun, opposite Helio, and just short of a quincunx to a Neptune-Mars-Hidalgo conjunction and a quincunx to Pluto—a yod which would have become exact within one to two days after the test. Washingtonia was square the Antivertex while America trined it.
I have to include one more Atlantis example, from the chart for the crash of a super-secret plane in California on July 11, 1986. I had been wondering what would happen when the transiting Sun finally caught up with Atlantis and there it was, just within the one degree orb to an opposition to Mars and within minutes of the Sun with both Sun and Atlantis trioctile Saturn and quincunx the eighth house Uranus and Mr. Spock and quincunx Dike (fate) and Pandora to form a yod. Potomac, Midas, and Fama were exactly conjunct on the third house cusp. It did hit the newspapers, and I’m sure it was expensive in more ways than one; the lost test pilot, a forest fire, a large area cordoned off for military protection, etc.
By now I have probably bored to death the people getting this for the world view, so let’s move on to that and risk boring the asteroid aficionados. First of all, late May through June were not as dramatic as I had anticipated, but there were events which fit the focus on the handling of political power. The two which I consider most crucial were just one month apart. On May 27, President Reagan announced that he would no longer be bound by SALT 2, that the U.S. planned to build more nuclear weapons than agreed to in the original arms limitation talks. Congress had never ratified the agreement, and Reagan has claimed that the Russians have not lived up to it, but his unilateral trashing of the formula was still greeted with dismay by many people who want to slow down the arms race. A local friend who writes for a newspaper has a brother who writes speeches in Washington. According to her brother, Reagan made the public announcement at a talk immediately following lunch, so a time of around 1 P.M. is likely to be close to accurate.
The other major event fitting the Mars station on Reagan’s Atlantis was his success in persuading Congress to vote the 100 million in aid for the Contras fighting against the Sandinistas in Nicaragua. The final vote occurred on the evening of June 25, shortly before midnight. I have run a tentative chart for 11:30 P.M. In the chart, the Moon was just about to rise, coming to an opposition to America, a quincunx to Winchester, squares to Juno and Saturn (the latter conjunct in Sagittarius in the ninth house), and a grand trine to Sun and Pluto. The trine will be exact in about four to six months by progressions, during the last two months of this year, so I am anticipating additional action at that time. Other aspects in the chart include Sun opposite Neptune within minutes, Washingtonia square Pluto, Karl Marx and Siva on the tenth house Uranus, and Rockefellia on the IC. A grand cross in fixed signs, partly fixed and partly mutable houses, includes Russia, Wladilena (Lenin), Hispania, and Gaea with Harmonia. In a nutshell, they show an expensive power struggle.
The other major theme being featured in almost every newspaper, magazine, and newsletter I see involves our slide into depression. Of course I know I am attracting or perhaps just noticing what I already believe. One of the best overviews of the financial picture that I have seen appeared in the spring issue of the journal Foreign Affairs. Peter Drucker, a management specialist, described three basic changes which according to him have already happened in recent years and which require changes in our actions if we are to cope with the situation. None of the developments are being successfully handled at present. The first change is widely recognized. Drucker writes that commodities (raw materials) are in permanent oversupply, and therefore prices are depressed. The countries, including the United States, which used to export commodities and use the proceeds to buy products from other countries can no longer make enough on the raw materials to maintain an adequate trade balance or a living wage for the producers. The second change is also widely recognized. Labor (especially unskilled) is in permanent oversupply, and therefore in many areas, wages are going down in the face of intense international competition and as robots or other machines replace people. Drucker mentions in passing that we need to find a way to employ the unemployed or underemployed, but does not dwell on the consequences of these two realities. Modern science and technology now permit us to produce enough to provide adequately for the world, but we have not learned how to share the products. Robots can make steel and build cars, but they do not buy cars. People working in subsistence jobs and supporting unemployed relatives cannot afford to buy cars.
Drucker’s third point is less discussed and less understood. Trade used to consist of an exchange of goods and services. Today, capital flows and exchange rates move independently of goods and services, and they control the world more and more. Drucker says that in dollar values, the exchange of goods and services amounts to about 2 1/2 to 3 trillion a year. The London Eurodollar market turns over about 75 trillion a year as the world’s financial institutions borrow and lend to each other. An additional 35 trillion is involved in currency exchanges in a year. Drucker says that this movement of money is not understood, is out of control, but is controlling the world. Drucker is a good capitalist, so he does not add that the massive debts of the less developed countries paying for expensive oil in the 1970s and of the U.S. paying for Reagan’s arms race and reduced taxes, have increased the wealth of a small minority and have reduced the living scale of the majority.
The blindness of those who have profited from our system and who are convinced that it is the best possible, can be amazing. An article in the July 30 issue of the Los Angeles Herald Examiner is headed: “Where has all the monetarist money gone?” The author acknowledges being a monetarist follower of Milton Friedman, Nobel Prize winner for his economic theories. When money is being pumped into the system as Reagan has by reducing taxes and spending borrowed money, there ought to be too many dollars chasing too few goods, and we should have inflation. The author does acknowledge that a dearth of customers does not mean a lack of need as some people do not have the money to buy the products which are in oversupply, but he just says that those people are “out of the discussion.” He does not seem to realize that when the money has all gone into the pockets of the rich while the laborers have their wages and hours cut, the result can be lots of products and relatively few purchasers. Many workers have imitated the governments of the world and borrowed more to try to maintain a desired standard of living while the wealthy create the “money flows” described by Drucker. “Supply-side” theory claimed that giving more money to the rich would encourage them to produce more. But producing more is obviously pointless when people can’t buy what you can produce, so the wealthy pursue more wealth by bidding up the stock market, buying and selling currencies, collecting coins, and looking for ways to avoid taxes. The author of the article just described, Nicholas von Hoffman, comments in his final paragraph “In broadest outline, the picture painted here bears a great deal of similarity to the profile of the American economy in 1927 or 1928, a time when the government was also printing a lot of money to, as it turned out, no avail.” The most Mr. Hoffman can hope for is a “soft landing” rather than a crash as we head toward what he calls “rock bottom.”
The Wall Street Journal is a recent addition to the tidal wave of reading matter which comes into our house regularly. Mostly, its articles are highly conservative, but they often include one liberal column. The July 31 Journal had an article by Alexander Cockburn which actually spelled out the damage being done to the developing countries by the IMF austerity programs and which suggested that the debtors might be well advised to take Fidel Castro’s advice and default on their impossible debts. Cockburn writes that 85% of Mexico’s rural population is hungry; some 30 million people. He says that South Korea is offered as an example of the success which would be possible if Mexico and the other debtor countries would stop helping their poor and have a free market. But he adds, South Korea has had government control over their economy that was even more total than Hungary, a part of the communist sphere. And they have achieved their success by keeping the workers on starvation level wages. Cockburn says that the countries of Latin America did make progress after the 1930s for a generation, under state-dominated, protectionist economies after repudiating their debts. He feels that the only way to escape economic contraction in the world is to throw off the overwhelming burden of the debts and to start over.
Another interesting view was described in the September issue of Richard Young’s Intelligence Report. Dates are sometimes strange. I received Young’s September issue before I got the July issue of another newsletter. Young quotes an economics professor at Southern Methodist University, Dr. Ravi Batra. “A depression of the same if not greater severity than that of the 1930s will occur in 1990 and will last until 1996.” Batra’s book is called “The Great Depression” and is based largely on cycles, including the Kondratieff long wave said to last from 50 to 60 years. Kondratieff’s theory involved new technology starting, reaching a peak and being superseded with a crash in one phase of the cycle. Batra combines this theory with the hypothesis of a man called P. R. Sarkar who suggested that wealth disparities caused destabilization in the capitalistic system with stock market crashes and depression periodically destroying the wealth concentration which came originally from inheritance. Batra thinks that the current environment is similar to the 1920’s, that it will lead to a violent stock market crash, a long period of business depression, a collapse of the banking system, with eventually a new socioeconomic system controlled by the military.
My newest newsletter comes from Weiss Research in West Palm Beach, Florida, and it also discusses the ongoing deflation. Weiss feels that all commodities will continue down, including gold and silver. He recommends keeping funds in Treasury notes and bills and zero-coupon T-bonds. He advises the liquidation of all inflation hedges. One of Weiss’ main theories is that “real” interest rates, the difference between nominal rates and the level of inflation or deflation, are a reliable indication of turning points of inflation and deflation throughout the 20th century. When the difference falls to zero or below, inflation is ahead. When the difference rises to 4% or more, deflation is ahead. Weiss writes that “after surging to 9% in 1983, the real T-bond yield has failed to decline below 6%, remaining well above the peaks of the 1960s and 1970s. ..... Now, this real T-bond yield is beginning to move back up again to challenge the 1983 highs.” He says that if the three-month inflation rate is used, 1983 has already been eclipsed; that the reduction of interest rates is too little and too late. He feels that the nation’s financial health is far worse than in 1929 since major corporations are heavily in debt rather than having cash hoards put away as in the ‘20s. But, since the government is now more willing to intervene, he thinks its efforts will produce a roller coaster effect which will prolong the agony of the crash.
One more newsletter by Maxwell Newton agrees in predicting deflation, presenting different but complementary facts about the economy. For example, Newton comments that the supposedly encouraging increase in GNP growth during the first quarter of 1986 was almost entirely due to a build up of inventories due to falling sales. Falling sales are not a sign of economic health. The other large contributor to supposed economic growth was the rise in the stock market which could easily be a bubble waiting to burst. Newton claims that the U.S. has actually grown less than 2% a year for the past seven years (which is since the big oil price jump in 1979 though he does not mention that). He points to our debts and our trade deficit along with Japan’s surplus as intractable problems. Drucker’s article mentioned above throws more light on that issue, explaining that the Japanese have continued to buy our bonds even though they were losing money as the yen became worth more compared to the dollar, because they were more terrified of unemployment than anything else and needed to keep the U.S. solvent to buy their products. The Japanese are noted for what we call the Puritan or Capricorn-Virgo work ethic, and are psychologically more devastated by unemployment than most people.
Of course, I have other writers who predict that the DOW will hit 2500 or 3000. Naturally, they are mostly brokers who are selling stocks. I will end this section of doom and gloom with a quote from the Economist, a financial weekly magazine produced in England but with an American edition. In the July 26 issue on page 72, an article is titled “Worries during the two-Perrier lunch.” The anxieties in New York, London, and Tokyo are discussed, ending with a description of the expectation that at least the Tokyo stock market should do well on domestic stocks as they persuade people to buy more. The author comments: “Unfortunately, a lot of Japanese consumers do not seem set on increasing their spending because many are worried sick about recession. There is even an argument that, as the interest rate offered to the Japanese depositor becomes ever more derisory, he may save more of his salary to preserve the same interest income. This would be the reaction to expect in an economy where deflation has taken hold.
“In such conditions, cash becomes king. Illiquid investments—e.g. property, gold or old masters—become progressively less interesting. It may be no coincidence that property values are generally flat except in those financial centres—London, New York, and Tokyo—which are prospering from the boom in financial assets, and in the salaries of the people who trade these pieces of paper.”
We are back to Drucker; to the “money flows” of the wealthy or the would-be-wealthy that are fleeing taxes or political instability and are pursuing that elusive edge, to outwit the system.
Item: Nearly 16% of all Britons live in poverty. In a population of 56 million, the number receiving government handouts rose from 5.9 million in 1979 when Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister to 8.8 million in 1983. The Economist reports that the numbers are rising in 1986.
Item: Columbia Savings and Loan in Beverly Hills, California, paid its chief executive, Thomas Spiegel, 9 million dollars in 1985. Only Lee Iacocca of Chrysler and T Boone Pickens Jr., the oil man and corporate raider, were paid more. Five other officers of Columbia Savings received at least 300,000 dollars in 1985.
Item: Over half of new union contracts in the first half of 1986 in manufacturing had wage freezes. 3% had wage cuts but they were big cuts resulting in lower overall wages and benefits for manufacturing workers.
Item: 83 banks have failed so far this year.
The preceding notes have been all “world” and no astrology. I attended two interesting talks by Ray Merriman at the UAC conference. He handed out his own economic newsletter which described his successful predictions of the volatile movements of the stock market and gold in early June, and he predicted a correction of the market of up to 200 points on the DOW, starting by the middle of July. It has been happening, right on schedule! Ray also showed an interesting graph with the market movement in the 1920s compared to recent years. The parallel rises and falls are uncanny, but if the parallel is accurate, we are currently at 1927 with a ways to go before the big crash. Ray feels that the market will come back for one more big rise, perhaps to 2300 on the DOW, before the big crash in late 1987 or the first half of 1988 when Uranus and Saturn go into Capricorn.
Despite the impressive graph, I’m still edgy about the latter part of this year, 1986. There are so many signs of weakness in the economy, and the aspects in our national charts look pretty tense from mid-October on. Also, while I agree with the predictions of a coming depression as discussed by the newsletters described above, I am not convinced that all commodities will remain low. Gold and (to a lesser extent) silver are hedges against shaky paper money, and they may hold their present value or gain. The weather can hit crops to produce shortages and price jumps. The Jupiter-Saturn conjunction in Libra is theoretically a key to the last 20 years of our century, and air suggests the possibility of droughts and wind damage. The major planets in Capricorn and Aquarius from 1984 through the rest of the century suggest periods of severe cold. Our “earthquake month” in California may be a foretaste of more earth movements during this same period. Scientists say that three cycles of Vesuvius eruptions reach a peak of potential activity at the same time in the next few years. One of the cycles dates back to the destruction of Pompeii. The volcano is being constantly monitored. In addition to local devastation, the airborne dust of a massive eruption can block out enough sun to lower temperatures worldwide.
In the face of such prospects, what can individuals do? We can work, develop skills, stay practical, (out of debt if possible), and help each other. So much more might be said, but time and space run out. Hopefully, we can find some cheerful news to report in the fall issue of Asteroid-World. Some day, we may be able to predict quakes and eruptions.
